Finding Purpose Through Opportunity: Joseph’s Story at Newark Catholic High School
Beth Lawson – Director of Media & Communication, School Choice Ohio
At School Choice Ohio, we are proud to celebrate students whose educational journeys reflect the power of finding the right fit. Joseph Lepi was selected as one of three top essay winners in our 2026 SCO Essay Scholarship Contest, where students were invited to share what their education means to them as they prepare to graduate and take their next steps.
Joseph’s story highlights how access to educational choice can shape not only academic success, but also character, leadership, and a clear sense of purpose for the future.
Joseph’s Essay: What My Education Means to Me
Having the ability to choose my school had a lasting impact on who I am today and who I am working to become. Attending Newark Catholic High School shaped my education, values, and goals in ways that reach far beyond academics. The environment challenged me to take responsibility for my learning, serve others, and grow as both a student and a person.
A Foundation Built on Challenge and Growth
“Having the ability to choose my school had a lasting impact on who I am today.”
My education pushed me to expect more from myself. Through rigorous coursework—including honors, AP, and college-credit classes—I developed strong study habits, critical thinking skills, and perseverance.
Over time, I learned how to manage challenges and respond when things did not come easily, building confidence in my ability to handle difficulty rather than avoid it.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Education at Newark Catholic extended far beyond academics. Service became a consistent part of my experience through organizations like Key Club and community outreach efforts.
“Serving others helped me become more aware of the needs around me and more willing to step in without being asked.”
These experiences shaped my understanding of responsibility and the importance of giving back to my community.
Leadership That Shapes Character
Through leadership roles such as Key Club President and cross country team captain, I learned valuable lessons about communication, accountability, and teamwork.
Leadership is not about titles—it’s about setting an example, supporting others, and continuing to grow even when faced with challenges.
The Power of a Supportive Environment
“The supportive environment at my school made a significant difference in my experience.”
Teachers and staff created an environment where I felt encouraged to ask questions, seek help, and take academic risks. That support allowed me to challenge myself with confidence and made learning feel purposeful rather than overwhelming.
Why School Choice Matters
“If I had not been able to attend my school, my education would have looked very different.”
School choice provided access to a community that fostered personal connection, leadership opportunities, and a balance between academic rigor and character development.
It allowed me to discover my strengths, grow through challenges, and connect my education to a greater purpose.
Prepared for the Future
My education helped shape my future goals, particularly my interest in engineering and problem-solving. Through both coursework and real-world responsibility, I developed the discipline and skills necessary for success beyond high school.
“School choice gave me more than an education. It gave me direction, confidence, and a sense of purpose.”
A Lasting Impact
Because I was able to attend a school that both challenged and supported me, I am prepared for what comes next. The lessons I’ve learned—through academics, service, leadership, and community—will continue to guide my decisions and actions moving forward.
I am motivated to use my education to make a meaningful difference.
Joseph’s experience is a clear example of how educational choice empowers students to reach their full potential. When students are given access to environments that challenge and support them, they gain more than knowledge—they gain the confidence, purpose, and direction needed to succeed in life.
