SB 89 Changes EdChoice Scholarship

The passage of Senate Bill 89 in November 2020 made several key changes to the EdChoice Scholarship Programs. Changes impact both the income-based (expansion) EdChoice and the traditional EdChoice Programs.

Effective with scholarships awarded for the 2021-22 school year, the income eligibility level for the income-based EdChoice program increases from 200% of the federal poverty level (FPL) to 250% FPL. The application window for income-based EdChoice opens February 1, 2021.

Eligibility for the traditional EdChoice program was also revised for the upcoming school year. Instead of eligibility being tied to a variety of report card grades, eligibility is established by earning a performance index score (a measure of overall achievement) in the lowest 20% of district schools for two consecutive years. Applications will be accepted beginning March 2, 2021. The list of eligible schools will be posted here in late January.

Students who were eligible for a traditional EdChoice for the 2020-21 school year are also eligible for a scholarship for the 2021-22 school year.

Students receiving a scholarship for the 2020-21 school year continue to be eligible for subsequent years.

Students must be accepted at their chosen private school before their application can be submitted.
