Defying the Myths: A Visit to Romero Academies Shows What Educational Choice Really Looks Like
Beth Lawson – Director of Media & Communication, School Choice OhioAs part of our #IAMEDCHOICE campaign, members of the School Choice Ohio team recently visited Romero Academies in Cincinnati—specifically their Resurrection and Annunciation campuses—and what we found there tells a very different story from the one opponents of educational choice continue to push.
At Romero Academies’ Resurrection and Annunciation campuses, educational opportunity is alive and thriving. Every student enrolled is on an EdChoice Scholarship, and the majority come from low-income families. In fact, no family pays any tuition for their child to attend. That reality alone underscores a powerful truth: Ohio’s scholarship programs are not about privilege—they’re about possibility.

Students Who Are Thriving
At Romero Academies’ Resurrection and Annunciation campuses, educational opportunity is alive and thriving. That reality alone underscores a powerful truth: Ohio’s scholarship programs are not about privilege—they’re about possibility.
A Partnership Rooted in Hope and Hard Work
While visiting, we had the opportunity to meet with parents to answer questions about the EdChoice program and hear their personal experiences. Time and again, families expressed deep gratitude for the disciplined, values-driven education their children are receiving at Romero Academies. For many, this opportunity represents more than a scholarship—it represents a chance for their children to grow, learn, and thrive in an environment where structure, support, and faith are foundational. The idea that educational choice would be taken from them brought a few parents to tears. School choice doesn’t just offer a brighter future for students, it gives hope to parents as well.
Yet, providing this education requires sacrifice and dedication. Since EdChoice funds don’t cover the full cost of educating a student, the school depends on fundraising to bridge the gap. It’s a partnership of faith, families, and community that makes this mission possible—an inspiring testament to what can happen when people come together to ensure every child has access to quality education.

A commitment to encourage each scholar’s potential, providing hope for a bright future
What stood out most during our visit were the students themselves. Every one of them spoke with enthusiasm about how much they love their school—their teachers, their classmates, and the sense of belonging they feel each day. They shared hopes and dreams that are both inspiring and attainable, thanks to a school culture that encourages success and celebrates potential.
The teachers at Romero Academies are more than instructors—they are mentors who invest deeply in their students’ success and well-being. Their dedication and passion shine through in every classroom, creating an environment where students are motivated to learn and believe in their futures.
A True Picture of Educational Choice
Romero Academies’ Resurrection and Annunication campuses are proof that educational choice works—especially for families who need it most. These schools defy the rhetoric that Ohio’s scholarship programs only serve the privileged. Instead, they stand as living examples of how EdChoice empowers families, uplifts communities, and helps children build brighter futures.

When we listen to the stories of the families and students at Romero Academies, it’s clear: educational choice isn’t about politics—it’s about people. It’s about giving every child the opportunity to attend a school where they are known, loved, and challenged to succeed.
These students and families are what #IAMEDCHOICE is all about.
