No second application window for Income-Based Program

The Ohio Department of Education (ODE) will not be opening a second application window this year for the Income-Based Scholarship Program.

The state budget bill, signed into law in June 2017, gave ODE the ability to cancel the program’s second application window if the program’s appropriated funds were depleted by awards made to applicants who applied during the first window.

While the department is still processing applications, they have made the decision to cancel the second window based on the number of applications received in the first window.

Priority when awarding Income-Based scholarships is given as follows:

  1. Renewal applicants are given first priority.
  2. New applicants with a family income at or below 100% of federal poverty guidelines are given second priority.
  3. New applicants with a family income between 101-200% of federal poverty guidelines are given third priority.

Parents who would like to check on the status of their child’s application should contact their private school or check the parent portal using their SAFE account, if they have one.

This is absolutely devastating to my family. My children have been receiving edchoice expansion for the past 4yrs. My son has only ever attended this one school and now will have to change to public school. He is extremely shy kid and has many social anxiety’s. He was thriving in his school we honestly do not know what the next year will be like for him. I wish that once you received edchoice you automatically got it again as long as you proved your income. Even if we choose to homeschool next year we have no guarantee they will be able to get it the following year

Hi Amber! If your children are renewal students for this program who submitted their renewal forms and income verification documents in the first window, they would be among the students who are given first priority. Please give us a call at 614-223-1555 if you have any questions or if you would like to discuss in more detail.
